Neurology
Outline
The Department of Neurology was established in April 1974 by Dr. Genjiro Hirose. As the first professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine (Neurology), Dr. Hirose made many achievements in various fields, including neurological symptomatology and diagnostics, neurotherapeutics, and neurophysiology. Following Dr. Hirose’s retirement in March 2005, Dr. Makoto Matsui was appointed the position of professor and chair of the department, and made significant achievements in the field of neuroimmunology, especially with respect to multiple sclerosis, until his retirement in March 2021. Most recently, in April 2021, Dr. Masato Asahina became the professor and chair of the department. Dr. Asahina specializes in neurodegenerative diseases and autonomic nervous system disorders, such as Parkinson's disease. In conducting joint research with Keio University’s Psychology Department, Dr. Asahina has been working on the development of emotion evaluation systems using autonomic nerve activity recordings. Dr. Asahina is also studying dyshidrosis in collaboration with professor Hiroo Yokozeki of the Department of Dermatology of Tokyo Dental and Medical University.
